This whole meme about Nibiru and an impending and extremely sudden Earth Crust Displacement has been percolating in the New Age fringe of pop culture for a good 50 years.

Someone wants you to believe that the unfathomably catastrophic events in this film are looming in our imminent future.

So, who wants you to believe this? Tavistock?

As you may have guessed, I have written at length about the whole Planet X, “Nemesis” Nibiru meme previously. Here’s a section from my last book.

WHAT THE HELL IS “PLANET X”?

At the opposite end of the credibility spectrum, there’s the urban legend that’s been circulating heavily since the mid-1990s about “Planet X,” which has recently come to be associated with 2012. Planet X was a term that was originally used over the centuries to describe undiscovered objects that were predicted to be found orbiting the Sun beyond Neptune, of which several have been discovered and given proper names by astronomers, such as Pluto. In the past decade, there have been many new discoveries of these trans-Neptunian objects, including Eris, which is 27% bigger than Pluto, Sedna, Makemake, Orcus, Haumea and others.

But in recent years, the term “Planet X” has morphed to signify a bigtime bogeyman of contemporary New Age legend, who threatens to knock all the local planets, comets and asteroids out of their orbits, heading for a fatal collision course with Earth.

ZECHARIA SITCHIN, NIBIRU & THE ANNUNAKI

The Planet X meme has its roots in the works of Zecharia Sitchin, author of thirteen books released between 1976 and 2009 that concern an as-yet undiscovered 12th Planet, which the ancient Sumerians called “Nibiru,” that allegedly has a very elliptical, 3,600-year orbit around the Sun.

Sitchin claims that this unlikely celestial body is the home planet of the highly advanced “Annunaki,” the extraterrestrial genetic engineers of Homo sapiens and the founders of the Sumerian civilization. Sitchin translates “Annunaki” from Sumerian into Hebrew as the “Nephilim” of the Bible, which was translated into the English of the King James Bible as “giants.” The Sumerian word “shem,” which is translated into “renown” in the King James Bible, Sitchin translates as “the rocketship”:

“There were giants [Annunaki] in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men, which were of old, men of renown [the rocketship].”

Sitchin’s volumes expound at length on the “real” meanings of the Sumerian cuneiform tablets, whose legends are often older versions of many Biblical and Classical myths. He also claims that the Annunaki “engaged in genetic engineering to fashion ‘The Adam’ – the Earthling – by upgrading the wild Homo erectus found in southeast Africa to become Homo sapiens (you and me).” A mutiny by Annunaki workers in their gold mines on Earth created a need for a new labor pool; by hybridizing Homo erectus with their own genetics, the Annunaki created Homo sapiens to be their slaves.

Sitchin maintains that the human civilization in Sumer was created under the guidance of the Annunaki and that an aristocracy was also created as a custodial caste, to intermediate between mankind (the slaves) and the Annunaki. It’s a fascinating yarn that has captured the imagination of a loyal following, despite being thoroughly discredited, eight ways till Sunday, by several different kinds of scientists. Shockingly, Sitchin says that the Vatican has given his interpretations its seal of approval!

SITCHIN RECEIVES THE IMPRIMATUR OF THE VATICAN (on Sitchin’s website)

“In what must be a historic first, a high official of the Vatican and a Hebrew scholar discussed the issue of Extraterrestrials and the Creation of Man, and though different from each other in upbringing, background, religion and methodology, nevertheless arrived at common conclusions:

* Yes, Extraterrestrials can and do exist on other planets
* Yes, they can be more advanced than us
* Yes, materially, Man could have been fashioned from a pre-existing sentient being.

“The high Vatican official was Monsignor Corrado Balducci, a Catholic theologian with impressive credentials: A member of the Curia of the Roman Catholic Church, a Prelate of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and the Propagation of the Faith, leading exorcist of the Archdiocese of Rome, a member of the Vatican’s Beatification Committee, an expert on Demonology and the author of several books. Appointed in the Vatican to deal with the issue of UFOs and Extraterrestrials, he has made in recent years pronouncements indicating a tolerance of the subjects; but he has never before met and had a dialogue with a Hebrew scholar, and gone beyond prescribed formulations to include the touchy issue of the Creation of Man.

“The Hebrew scholar was me – Zecharia Sitchin: A researcher of ancient civilizations, a biblical archaeologist, a descendant of Abraham…We ended the dialogue as friends, determined to stay in touch and continue.”

“PLANET X” HAS GOT LEGS!

In 1995 Nancy Lieder, a self-described contactee of extraterrestrials from Zeta Reticuli, started a popular website, ZetaTalk.com, as her mission to warn mankind about “Planet X,” which she equated with the “Nibiru” of the Sitchin books that she was “told,”

“…would sweep through the solar system in May 2003, causing a pole shift that would destroy most of humanity. The…magnetic disruption of the Earth’s core and subsequent displacement of the crust of the Earth is said to correspond with the event Christians refer to as the biblical Armageddon.

Sitchin disagrees with Lieder’s claim of impending global catastrophe…in 2007, partly in response to Lieder’s claims, he published a book, The End of Days, which set the time for the last passing of Nibiru by Earth at roughly 600 BC, which would mean it would be unlikely to return in less than 1,000 years.”

Lieder’s meme of an “imminent” terrestrial conflagration with an interloping planetoid is so strong that it spurred the 2007 publication of Planet X Forecast and 2012 Survival Guide – despite the failure of Lieder’s “Planet X” to materialize on the heavily-promoted May 15, 2003 forecast date – or by Zecharia Sitchin’s strong public denials of Nibiru’s imminent return.

CARLOS BARRIOS: “A FUSION OF POLARITIES”

The reader may have noticed a conspicuous dearth of Maya voices in the history of the 2012 meme. The following is from a press release posted on the Manataka American Indian Council website about the 2012 hype machine, written by Carlos Barrios, a Guatemalan author who trained for 25 years with Maya shamans to become a ceremonial priest and spiritual guide:

“Anthropologists visit the temple sites and read the steles and inscriptions and make up stories about the Maya, but they do not read the signs correctly. It’s just their imagination…

“Other people write about prophecy in the name of the Maya. They say that the world will end in December 2012. The Mayan elders are angry with this. The world will not end. It will be transformed. The indigenous have the calendars, and know how to accurately interpret it, not others.”

In other interviews, Barrios has explained how the few surviving Maya written documents, such as the Dresden Codex, have been misinterpreted by Western epigraphers because of the latter’s failure to grasp the obsession of the ancient Maya with the planet Venus and its importance in ancient Maya cosmology. For example, the first pages of the Popol Vuh describe how during the previous age the male deity called Wukub Kaquix (Venus) tried to “take over the place of the Father Sun” and the conflagration culminated in the destruction of the last world, of the “Men of Wood” in a rain of “resin.”

Some ancient Maya legends are strikingly reminiscent of the claims of the extremely controversial independent scholar Immanuel Velikovsky. As related by Barrios:

“…the oral tradition of the Elders describes to us: ‘millions of years ago Venus suffered the crash of another celestial body that provoked the destruction of the latter (perhaps an asteroid?), at the same time taking Venus out of its orbit. This provoked a series of cataclysms and readjustments in the planetary system, on the way to its current orbit and due to its proximity to the terrestrial orbit. It changed the rectitude of the Mother Earth (the terrestrial axis?). It also tried to take over the Sun’s position, since it seemed bigger than any other celestial body in the skies and it outshone the Sun and the Moon [such that] they were no longer visible, and its pride and vanity grew to a point that it demanded the humanity of that time to worship it and pay tribute to its children, who could raise the mountains in one night (Zipacna) and destroy them on the next day (Cabracan)…[eventually], the Great Father Sun got its power back and the Moon [again] appeared at night. Now when Venus is seen it is only announcing that the Father Sun is coming and its power had been reduced to being the first star to be seen at night.’ In few words, this is the story of Venus told in the year 1987 by Don Pascual, who was one of the highest Wise men of the Eagle Clan of the MAM nation, the most ancient next to Qanjobal in the great Mayan civilization.”

Barrios says that the four traditional elements of earth, air, fire and water have ruled the preceding epochs of the past but that the Fifth Sun will be ruled by the element of ether saying, “Within the context of ether there can be a fusion of the polarities. No more darkness or light in the people, but an uplifted fusion.”

“We live in a world of energy. An important task at this time is to learn to sense or see the energy of everyone and everything: people, plants, animals. This becomes increasingly important as we draw close to the World of the Fifth Sun, for it is associated with the element ether – the realm where energy lives and weaves.”

Barrios’ latest offering, ‘The Book of Destiny’, was not yet released at the time of this writing but according to the publisher’s description it was written at the request of a council of Maya Elders, to accurately and poetically enunciate the scientific legacy of the Maya people, which has been preserved and transmitted over the centuries through their oral tradition and surviving written texts.
